what's the difference between high school AP class and community college class? for example, AP Physics at HHS and General Physics clas at CSM, which one should student take?
Ashley Milton
40:02
Community college classes are all one semester so can feel very fast. Community college classes provide the actual college credit, where any credit from AP classes is determined on a case by case basis by colleges.
Ashley Milton

The elective fair happens during tutorial (advisory) on Thursday

If the college course gets added to the HS transcript, doesn't it get figured into the student's GPA? This would be a good reason to have it added to the HS transcript.

In regard to AP and Electives, will the students be give a list that they can bring home to consult with their parents and decide together, if needed?

in what grade are most kids who take AP Env Science
yan wang
53:47
can student skip Chemistry and directly take AP Chemietry?
Janice Kelly
54:45
Hi Coleen, Many of the classes don't get a grade bump so actually, in a very insignificant way, it can actually lower your student's GPA because the total number is being divided by yet another number. So for example, if a student has a 3.86 and they take a class at CSM, get an A, it will drop the GPA to something like a 3.84. So it's a small drop, but a drop nevertheless. The only way it would help would be if it was a weighted class and many are not. A student needs to fill out a pre-approval form and then it is determined whether ornot they will get a grade bump. We tell students - don't take a community college class for the grade bump, take it because you're interested in it
Ashley Milton
55:26
Yes - Students will have an electronic copy and a paper copy of all the elective and course options that we have at HHS
Ms. Berger (she/her)
56:02
AP Environmental Science is a mix of Juniors and Seniors - probably slightly more Juniors
Ms. Berger (she/her)

Some students who decide to take chemistry over the summer will take AP Env. or AP Bio instead of AP Chem their 10th grade year
Janice Kelly
57:30
No, I have never heard of anyone taking AP Chemistry without taking regular Chem.

How about AP studio art? If they take it for two years, do they count for two year credits or just one year? Thanks!
Janice Kelly

what do you teach for AP Statics? will student major in Math get benefit for taking this class?
Zev Handelman
01:01:48
If a 9th grader completes Algebra 2, do I assume that the math options in 10th grade are the same options you presented on the slide?
Janice Kelly
01:02:27
Yes, Zev. They still do need to show 4 year colleges where they took Geom and it needs to be an accredited program.
Zev Handelman
01:02:53
Great… thanks
Janice Kelly
01:03:50
Ping, Studio Art - AP would be considered one year - 10 credits. with grade bump. Beg. Art and Adv. Art - 10 additional credits, no grade bump.

Hi Lilian—this particular meeting is not, but the school will be able to help you if you reach out to the office. thank you!
Janice Kelly

Hi Lilian, I don't believe this is being offered in Spanish and we apologize for that. But Vilma Oliviera's parent evening presentations often have our counseling team there to answer these questions.

Hi Yan, Wow! Calc as a 9th grader! Most impressive!! They can take AP Stats or Math 252 up at CSM. We also currently have two of our students taking Multi Variable Calc at Aragon - that might also be an option.

he is taking at Hillsdale.

To be competitive for college (not Harvard/UC, but solid middle road colleges) does a junior need 1 or 2 AP classes if that student plans to take two 1 semester dual enrollment classes? How important are the AP classes for college acceptance?
Fire Tablet
01:12:20
Pre calculus with AP statistics in Junior year doable or split it up and take later in Senior year?
Janice Kelly
01:12:35
Colleges expect to see rigor built into the student's schedules. I think one or two AP classes would look great. But colleges also tell us that it doesn't come down to one class over another class - it's the overall big picture. Most importantly, it's important for students to take classes that bring them joy.
